A plain old black umbrella is boring and looks old fashioned.Agree? So, Today I am going to show you how to spruce up a plain umbrella without spending much with just one basic supply - white fabric paint. It is that simple.Let's see how.
Materials Required:
Plain Umbrella
White fabric paint
White crayon(Optional)
Paint brush
Painter's tape(Optional)
Foam brush(Optional)
Step 1: Plan your design. I decided to draw a dahlia flower.I practiced how it is going to look on a piece of paper before painting it on the umbrella. To make it easier, I used white crayon and hand drew the design I planned on to the umbrella.
Step 2: Use a fine tip paint brush and paint over the traced design.
Step 3: Once the dahlia is complete. I felt something is missing so I decided to outline the umbrella. For this, use painter's tape and tape it 2 inches from the hem.
Step 4: Use foam brush and paint the outline white. It took 3 coats of paint to get an opaque look.Once it is dry, you are done. I added some decorative lines in the center to mimic a real flower and it really added a nice touch to the whole look. That is it!! You can now rock the April showers in style.
Hope you enjoyed this simple project of revamping a plain umbrella and I think you will give this project a try. Whatever plain color umbrella you have, use a contrasting color fabric paint to draw the design. There are many design possibilities. If you are design challenged, better go with geometric shapes and use painter's tape to create the design and fill it up with colorful fabric paint. It will be so cool if it is a white umbrella.
I think this project gives you the inspiration to make your own painted umbrella. Share what you think in the comments below. As always I will be happy to hear from you. Share it with your friends and tag me in any of the social media shown above if you make this project.I would love to see your creations.

ReplyDeleteSahana this is a great upcycle. I love the design you painted on there. I have to tell you a funny story. I tried to paint over these giant Coka Cola umbrellas that I had, I was trying to hide the logo. I added paint by the bucket full but those stubborn logos would not be hidden. Finally it started to rain and the paint came off. You can imagine what an epic fail that was! Thank you for joining us over at Sweet Inspiration.
ReplyDeleteThank you Mary :) That is funny! But I tested it in running water and also tried to remove the paint manually under water by scratching it. The paint did not come off at all. I was surprised :) .
