During my last dollar tree visit, I came through this wire gauze pen holder , (I don't know whether it is called so, but I feel like putting it that way :P) which made me think about embroidery. It is because ,my mind pictured the wire gauze as stretched steel fabric. So, today I am going to show how to personalize dollar store pen holder using braided cord which is also from dollar store.Lets see how to do it.
Materials required:
Wire gauze pen holder
Braided cord or Embroidery floss
Marker
Scissors
Glue(optional)
Clear nail polish (Optional)
Needle (optional)
Step 1: Write the name you wish to personalize using the marker.(I wrote my hubby's name -Sriram in CAPS)
Step 2: Take a lengthy cord and tie a knot at the end. Start looping through the holes.Do it in such a way that ,you should go through the holes twice to give a even and neat coverage. For example,
Lets name the holes 1,2,3,4
1 - Back to Front
2 - Front to Back
3 - Back to Front
2 - Front to Back
4 - Back to Front and so on.
It is just normal in out process done similar to back stitch in embroidery. It takes two to three times to get hold of the looping process. There is no hard and fast rule for this, just go as your mind says.
Use clear nail polish and needle to ease the process of looping.Apply a coat of nail polish to stop unraveling of thread from the cord.Needle helps to poke the cord through the hole.Secure a knot once you are done with a letter and continue the rest in same way.
I used braided cord as it will be thick enough to cover and give a neat look but you can also use 3 to 4 strands of embroidery floss.Thread the embroidery floss with needle for easy looping.
Step 3: This step is optional. To cover the top rim , secure the end with a dab of glue and start winding the cord around the rim by leaving the cord and taking out through the holes and secure the end with glue once it is done.Voila!!Now you have your own personalized pen holder.
I gave this as a gift to my hubby (Nothing special to celebrate. As a DIYer wife, I like to give him surprise gifts whenever I feel like.He also likes it .Come on !!Who will not :P).Recently, he has gained a little love for golf as it has become our summer time go to game. So, I thought of packing it to look like a golf club.
Lets see how I made that,
Materials Required :
Black, blue and silver paper(I used construction paper & tissue paper)
Clear tape
Scissors
Bamboo Skewers - 3
White card stock(optional)
Step 1:Wrap the pen holder in a white cardstock to give a strong solid base to cover further.Trace a circle using the penholder and cover the top of the pen holder with the white cardstock. This step is optional.
Step 2:Wrap the three bamboo skewer with clear tape and wrap it with silver paper (Had some silver holographic tissue paper from dollar stores) and glue it to the bottom of the pen holder.
Step 3: Wrap the pen holder again in black paper and glue a oval silver paper to look as a golf club.
Step 4: Wrap the top part of the stick with blue paper for the grip and tape it.Draw small lines to imitate the look of the golf club.Attach a gift tag with ribbon.Voila , now the pen holder golf club is ready !!!
As I was in a hurry to complete it before he comes from the office , I managed to wrap it with the materials I had in hand. You can try this look with different color wrapping papers to get a more polished look. I feel the black and blue paper I used was kind of dull.I suggest you to go with a complete dark black and blue wrapping paper.
