DIY Christmas lights Choker & Necklace

This random idea of Christmas lights necklace popped in my head last week when I was thinking about Christmas decor and other things. I thought this is a perfect idea and had to share it with you all. When I was brainstorming ideas for materials to use, Shrinky dinks was calling my name. So, I using it to show you how to make DIY Christmas lights jewelry. Let's get started.

How to make christmas lights jewelry using shrinks sinks

Materials Used:
Transparent Shrinky dinks
Markers in various colors
Scissors
Paper punch
Leather cord 1mm or chain for necklace
Jump rings
Lobster clasp
Spiral end caps (optional)
Pliers
Oven & Baking sheet

Step 1: Draw a light bulb shape onto a plain paper as a template. The length of the bulb I drew is approx 2" in length.

Step 2 : Trace the bulb shape onto Shrinky dinks plastic using color markers. I used black marker for tracing the top part and different color marker depicting the Christmas lights for the bottom part. I did this using 5 different colors.

Step 3: Punch holes onto the bulb shape according to your desire. I made one hole for necklace style and two holes  for choker style avoiding jump rings. But it is totally up to you to choose your style. You can also use jump rings for choker style and go with a single hole.

Step 4: Place the bulb shapes onto a baking sheet lined with a parchment paper and bake them according to the manufacturer's instructions. I baked at 325F until it shrunk. After the bulbs shrunk, the size reduced to 0.75" from 2". This might vary depending on the manufacturer, so make a sample piece to ensure it shrinks to the size you want before replicating the shapes.

Step 5: For Choker style

Take 3 strands of 1mm leather cord measuring 14" in length. Secure it using a tape as shown. Now make 3 strand braid for few inches. String each bulb with 1" inch intervals as you braid to create that wire look. Braid till you run out of the cord. Secure each end with the end caps. Use a jump ring to attach the lobster clasp to complete the choker.

For Necklace style:
Use jump rings to attach each bulb to the chain and close the ends with a lobster clasp on one end and extension links on the other end. The chain I used for making the necklace was shorter so I added extension links to make it longer. Here is the completed necklace.

How fun is this choker & necklace idea? I thought this will be a good replacement for those funky Christmas lights necklace you get at the store. These would be perfect for any Christmas themed sweater and it is so easy to make. What do you think about this necklace ? Share with me in the comments below.
