I came up with this idea of making a galaxy night lamp as we needed a night lamp for our restrooms. Restrooms in our apartment are located in such a way that when someone switches ON the light it directly hits the face of the people sleeping in the bedroom.So, I needed something subtle for the late night trips to the bathrooms. I came across a $1 LED lamp in the dollar store and there was only piece left so I immediately grabbed it, as I don't see this kind of LED lamp in the dollar tree I regularly shop. I wanted something fun instead of a regular night lamp and also I don't want to spend a ton on a $1 lamp which ended up in a Galaxy night lamp using Christmas ornament from the dollar store. Let's see how.

Materials Used:
Sunbeam LED night lamp with ON/OFF switch
Christmas ornament - 1
Markers in galaxy colors(purple, violet, pink, blue, magenta, etc)
White pen or star stickers
Glue
Step 1: Remove the cover and unwanted parts from the night lamp. I removed a small cap like thing on the top of the LED bulb as I wanted the light to be bright. Make sure the ornament you are using fits perfectly. The Ornament I am using here is also from the dollar store.(for your reference)
Step 2: Use markers and color the ornament randomly with all the galaxy color markers possible.
Step 3: Use a paper towel or cotton pad dipped in rubbing alcohol to smudge the marker lines on the ornaments. Make sure the cotton pad or paper towel you are using is just damp and not wet.
Step 4: Use a white pen to draw stars on the outside of the ornament. Allow it to dry. Use glue to attach the ornament to the lamp base. And then, you're done!. Plug in the lamp to enjoy the amazing galaxy night light.
How simple was that? Instead of drawing the stars, if you have any star stickers you can use that or you can cut tiny stars out of vinyl if you have a cutting machine. How do you like the look of this lamp? I had the markers, rubbing alcohol, cotton pads, white pens, etc already and I'm sure most of you will have these basic supplies already at home like me. So, to be exact, this lamp costs $1.50 only(You will get 2 Christmas ornaments for $1) excluding the other common supplies.
I used an extender to plug the lamp as the ornament hits the wall.If you don't have one at home, you can trim the ornament into half so that it doesn't hit the wall.Share what you think about this galaxy night lamp in the comment below. As always I will be happy to hear from you.

ReplyDeleteSince it is a LED night lamp I had no problem with heating. If you are concerned with the closed look a you can cut the ornament in half and use it as I mentioned in the post. Hope this helps.
DeleteWe are having trouble smearing the ink... it's just rubbing off. Any tips, besides just having the cotton ball be damp?
ReplyDeleteAllow the sharpie to dry and just do it very lightly.Don't wet the cotton ball, just a spray of water should help.
Deletei had the same problem....even when ink dried....cotton ball wiped it off. Tried many different things and I couldn't get ink not to wipe off.
