How to sew an eyeglass case with a pocket

This is a completely unplanned post idea that popped into my mind at the last moment. My mom's birthday is on coming Sunday and I thought this will be a perfect gift for her. I recently noticed she was using the sample pouch I made for the DIY felt pouches as an eyeglass case which I left at our house back in India almost 4 years ago. I never thought she will be using that as an eyeglass case because I just gave it to her saying the purse kind is for her but you can also keep this(the trial one).The pouch started pilling so I thought I will make her a new one. Here is how I made.

 Materials used:
1/2 yard of printed cotton
Pellon 809 decor bond - 1/4 yard
Fusible thermolam plus - 1/4 yard
A piece of contrasting color solid cotton fabric for pocket binding
A button
Hook and loop fastener for pocket (Velcro)
Iron
Fabric scissors

Meaurements: 

Back part 4.5" X 10"        --> 2 pieces of printed cotton
                                          --> 1 piece of decor bond interfacing
                                          --> 1 piece of fusible thermolam plus
Front part 4.5" X 7"          --> 2 pieces of printed cotton
                                          --> 1 piece of decor bond interfacing
                                          --> 1 piece of fusible thermolam plus
Front pocket 4" X 4.5"      --> 2 pieces of printed cotton
Pocket binding 1" X 4.5"  --> Binding piece from contrasting color solid cotton fabric

Step 1: Fuse the interfacing with cut fabric pieces. I used decor bond interfacing for the outer fabric and Thermolam plus for inner lining fabric to add extra protection and softness for the eyeglass. 

Step 2: Sew the one side of the hook and loop fastener onto the lining piece and another onto the outer part of the front fabric piece. Then fold and iron the binding piece and sew to the top edge of the front pocket pieces combining both the lining and outer pocket fabric. 

Step 3: With right sides together, sew the top part of the front piece and turn it inside out and make a top stitch. Then sew front pocket part on to the front part of the eyeglass case leaving 1/4" seam allowance on the sides. Hand stitch or machine stitch(if your machine has that provision) the button to the front part. 

Step 4: With right sides together, shape the flap part of the back piece using fabric scissors. Sew the flap part alone with 1/4" seam allowance and turn it inside out so that the wrong sides are together. Sew the buttonhole.You can top stitch the flap part but I felt it is bulkier so I did not do it. 

Step 5: Now, with right sides of the front and back part together, sew along three sides leaving 1/4" seam allowance and turn the whole thing inside out. The eyeglass case is now ready. 

How simple was that? My mom use to keep bills and some cash in her eyeglass case that is why I wanted to include a pocket so she can use that to keep her knick-knacks. And also, my mom loves ice creams so I thought this ice cream fabric from my stash will be a perfect choice for her eyeglass case.  I think this turned out cute but if I have to make another case I would probably add velcro or a zipper as a closure instead of a button. I found the button was quite tough to open and close as the button I used was thin compared to normal buttons. I would either change the button to thicker one or change the closure itself to zipper or Velcro. What do you think? Share with me in the comments below. As always I will be happy to hear from you.
