I purchased felt in shades of green, pink, black and white last summer to make fruit pouches but never got time. Last week, I got an idea to make an avocado purse. So, I decided to use the green felt I already had and lined it with nylon leftover from DIY toddler backpack. The purse turned out cute and roomy. Let's see how.
Material Used:
Green felt in two shades
brown felt
Nylon
Green zipper - 9"
Sewing machine
Fabric scissors
Pattern
Step 1: Trace the pattern and cut the fabric as required. Trace and cut the outer piece then trim the pattern to cut the inside piece and repeat the steps.
Step 2: Sew the brown felt as shown on to the light green felt with 1/8" seam allowance. Repeat this step for the other piece. Then, Sew the light green piece on to the bigger felt piece and the lining piece with 1/8" allowance. Now the front and back piece for the purse is ready.
Step 3: Prepare the zipper and gusset part. Cut two inches width of the fabric in the green felt and lining piece with the length matching the circumference of the avocado + 1/2" seam allowance. Now, cut one piece of fabric matching the length of the zipper and repeat the same for the lining part. Then cut that piece in half so that each piece is one inch.
Attach the zipper to the felt and lining piece by sandwiching the zipper in between the pieces. ( I did not fold the felt piece as it will be bulky. Trimmed the extra to match with the lining piece.)
Step 4: Attach the gusset part with the zipper. Make sure the length of the finished part matches with the circumference of the front and back pieces.
Step 5: Pin the gusset with front or back piece and sew it together. then sew a zigzag stitch at the edge to prevent unraveling of the lining piece. You can also do binding using a bias tape if you prefer.
Step 6: Repeat the same on the other side. Make sure to keep the zipper open before doing this step to turn the purse inside out after. Once you turn it inside out, the purse is complete and ready to use. How simple and cute is the avocado purse?
What will you use this purse for, if you happen to make one? This is quite roomy and so I am thinking maybe I will use to carry my son's toys in the diaper bag or use it as a toiletries bag when we travel. I am still thinking! Share your ideas in the comment below. As always I will be happy to hear from you.
